TruTrade was selected as the 2018 winner of the Dochas Innovation in Development award at a ceremony in Dublin, Ireland in early December.
The social enterprise was selected ahead of a number of other strong contenders for the prize, awarded by Dochas, which is the representative organization for Irish non-governmental international development organizations.
TruTrade has continued to grow its reach and impact, doubling its trading volumes in 2018 and further developing the sourcing and digital payments platforms. On average, it has paid farmers in Uganda and Kenya 15% premiums for their produce in 2018, across 12 commodities ranging from soy and sesame to cassava and avocado.
“We’re delighted with the award,” said TruTrade CEO Jenny Rafanamezana, “as it’s recognition from our peers that we’re making real progress in bringing increased value to smallholder producers by making rural trading more efficient. We’re looking forward to further strong growth in 2019, as well as continuing to develop out this digital platform to offer increased services to smallholders and indeed large offtakers.”
